Control Pea Pests and Diseases
Insecticide & Fungicide
Peas (Pisum sativum) are a popular legume crop with high nutritional value and culinary uses. However, their cultivation can be significantly affected by various pests and diseases, leading to reduced yields and quality. To effectively manage these challenges, it is crucial to understand the key pests and diseases and their symptoms. Sunjoy Agro has developed appropriate chemical controls to address these issues.
Here are some of the main pests that affect peas and the recommended solutions provided by Sunjoy Agro.
1. Aphids (aphidoidea)
These small, soft-bodied insects suck sap from the leaves and stems, causing distorted growth and reduced vigor. Aphid populations can explode in warm, dry conditions. Sunjoy Agro recommends using Flonicamid 133g/L + Acetamiprid 106g/L OD, Nitenpyram 20% SP, Bifenthrin 10% SC, or Spirotetramat 50% SC to control aphids on peas.
2. Spider Mites (Tetranychidae)
Spider mites form fine webs on the undersides of leaves to cause stippling, yellowing, and eventually leaf drop. They thrive in hot, dry environments and can quickly build up resistance to pesticides. Sunjoy Agro recommends Abamectin 5% + Spirodiclofen 40% SC or Abamectin 1.8% EC.
3. Pea Leaf miner (Liriomyza bryoniae)
The pea leaf miner (PLM) is a small fly species whose larvae mine inside leaves, causing damage that can reduce plant growth, yield, and quality. The PLM life cycle includes egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Female adults lay their eggs on the underside of host plant leaves. After hatching, larvae tunnel into the leaf tissue, creating mines that can be seen as irregular white or brown blotches on the leaf surface. As they feed, there are distinctive serpentine mines visible on the upper surface of leaves, causing the leaves to become distorted and may eventually drop prematurely. Sunjoy Agro recommends Cyromazine or Abamectin.
4. Pea Moth (Lepidoptera)
The voracious larvae of the pea moth feed on leaves, flowers, and pods, leading to plant damage and reduced marketability and yield. Sunjoy Agro recommends the use of sex pheromone traps for monitoring and trapping adult moths. In addition, Emamectin Benzoate 9.1% WG, Chlorfenapyr19% + Lufenuron 5% SC, Chlorantraniliprole 30% + Lufenuron 45% WG, Lufenuron 40% + Emamectin Benzoate 5% WG, or Indoxacarb 12% + Chlorfenapyr 18% SC can be used as chemical controls.
Sunjoy Agro also provides recommended solutions for some of the main diseases that affect peas. The following are the diseases and recommended solutions.
1. Root Rot (Pythium spp. and Fusarium spp.)
Root rot causes wilting, stunted growth, and brown, rotten roots. Plants may collapse and die suddenly. Sunjoy Agro recommends using Copper Oxychloride 84% WG or Copper Hydroxide 77% WG.
2. Powdery Mildew (Erysiphe pisi)
Powdery mildew appears as a white, powdery coating on the upper surfaces of leaves, which can lead to leaf distortion and reduced photosynthesis. Sunjoy Agro recommends Sulfur 80% WG, Pyraclostrobin 15% + Boscalid 30% SC, Pyraclostrobin 16% + Tebuconazole 32% SC or Difenoconazole 125g/L + Azoxystrobin 200g/L SC.
3. Downy Mildew (Peronospora pisi)
Downy mildew causes yellow spots on the upper leaf surface with corresponding grayish growth on the underside. It can lead to premature leaf fall and reduced fruit set. Sunjoy Agro recommends the use of Rowsong (Cymoxanil 56% + Cyazofamid 14% DF).
4. Pea Rust (Puccinia pisi)
The disease manifests as yellowish-orange pustules on the upper surfaces of leaves, stems, and pods. The fungus produces spores that are spread by wind and rain, leading to rapid spread under favorable conditions. Sunjoy Agro recommends Sulfur 80% WG.
5. Pea Anthracnose (Colletotrichum pisi)
Symptoms of this disease include dark brown, water-soaked lesions typically found along leaf veins, which may result in wilting and eventual plant death. Sunjoy Agro recommends Thiophanate-methyl 70% WG, Pyraclostrobin 16% + Tebuconazole 32% SC or Difenoconazole 125g/L + Azoxystrobin 200g/L SC.
Pea cultivation requires careful management to ensure a healthy crop free from pests and diseases. By following good cultural practices and selecting Sunjoy Agro solutions, farmers can successfully produce high-quality peas while minimizing environmental impact. Remember to always read and follow the label instructions when applying any chemical products.
