Algae Control

We believe innovation is the answer to today’s agricultural challenges.

An overgrowth of algae can negatively impact the ecosystem.

Algal blooms can cause huge environmental pollution and fishery loss. Algae thrive on three basic necessities: water, light, and nutrients. If there is an excess of any of these variables, algae can grow like wild weeds. Of all algae, the most harmful is Cyanophyta, or blue-green algae, which spread rapidly and are very difficult to control.

Blue-green algae multiply geometrically and continuously secrete toxic metabolites into the water. At the same time, the death and decomposition of the algae will also consume a large amount of dissolved oxygen. Under the conditions of severe hypoxia and the presence of toxic substances, fish, shrimp, and crabs will die in large numbers.

The Bioassay Center of Sunjoy Agro has its own laboratory and test base, seeking differentiated plant protection solutions around key crops and environmental issues. In 2018, the Center introduced water body protection laboratories, microcosm, and mesocosm test systems to conduct research on algae controls.

In December 2021, Sunjoy Agro issued and implemented the group standard T/ZNX017-2021 “Guidelines for Field Efficacy Trial for Algaecide against Planktonic Algae” by Zhejiang Pesticide Industry Association. Algaecides are biological and chemical products that are used to control algae populations. Phytoplankton refers to algae that live in water and move passively under the action of wind and current. Common planktonic algae in fresh water include Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Euglenophyta, Pyrrophytam, Chrysophyta, Xanthophyta, and Cryptophyta.

Since 2018, the Bioassay Center has started researching phytoplankton that can cause algal blooms in water bodies. The researchers tested the common flocculants and algaecides on the market and found that these agents will quickly reduce the dissolved oxygen in the water after killing the blue-green algae, thereby threatening the safety of aquatic organisms. After 5 years of research, we developed the combination of "TQ-2023 + Chlorella" to control blue-green algae. The combination has a quick effect and gives long-lasting protection to water body. It basically kills all the blue-green algae on the first day after the application, and the control effect is still about 90% even after 15 days.

TQ-2023 is the code name of Sunjoy Agro’s patented algaecide that contains peroxide. It releases oxygen and effectively controls algae when it enters the water. The dissolved oxygen of TQ-2023 treated pools is greater than 5.0mg/L, which makes up for the hypoxia caused by the death of algae and avoids the death of aquatic organisms. TQ-2023 can selectively kill blue-green algae, but have a minor impact on beneficial algae, or Chlorella. Chlorella not only seizes the ecological niche that prevents the re-explosion of blue-green algae, but also increases the dissolved oxygen in the water through photosynthesis, making the water body more suitable for the growth of aquatic organisms.

The "TQ-2023 + Chlorella" combination is one of Sunjoy Agro’s algae control product lines. We will keep introducing environmentally beneficial products to the market in the future. We hope that through our research, we can achieve comprehensive prevention and control of algae bloom, stabilize the water environment, and achieve the ecological balance of the water body.
