Pyroxasulfone: A Pre-emergence Herbicide

Weeds compete fiercely with crops for water, nutrients, and sunlight, leading to stunted growth, yield loss, and potential disease transmission. They also reduce the visual appeal and market quality of produce. Manual weeding is inefficient and costly, while post-emergence herbicides may harm young vegetable seedlings. In contrast, pre-emergence herbicides like Pyroxasulfone and Pendimethalin applied after sowing but before weed emergence can form a chemical barrier in the soil to effectively suppress weed germination, reducing weed pressure and management costs later on. This approach minimizes root damage caused by mechanical or chemical weeding, making it an essential practice in modern cultivation.

 

Pyroxasulfone is a highly effective and broad-spectrum pre-emergence herbicide that works by inhibiting the synthesis of very-long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in weed seedlings, disrupting cell division and membrane formation to control both grasses and certain broadleaf weeds. Compared to other herbicides, Pyroxasulfone offers distinct advantages, including low application rate, long residual activity (40-60 days), excellent crop safety (no root inhibition), and environmental friendliness (low leaching potential). It is particularly suitable for herbicide-sensitive vegetables like carrots and onions, demonstrating a broader weed control spectrum and better safety profile than traditional herbicides such as Acetochlor and Pendimethalin.

 

A field trial was conducted on a white radish field in Ningbo, Zhejiang, on October 24, 2024. The experimental area was sprayed with Pyroxasulfone 85% WG, with the dosage of 125 g a.i./hm2 after radish sowing. The performance of the treatment was observed 138 days after application. The result demonstrated that Pyroxasulfone maintained excellent weed control for over four months under low temperatures at just 125 g a.i./hm2 dosage, maintaining effectiveness throughout winter.

After 138 days, the treated plot showed virtually no weeds with a clean soil surface, while the untreated control plot was overgrown with weeds, some already flowering.
