In December 2021, I accepted a job at Sunjoy Agro as a Crop Manager. I still remember the day I signed the labor contract. It was a cold winter afternoon, but the moment I stepped into the headquarters office, I felt a warm working atmosphere, and everyone seemed so focused and motivated. I had a strong feeling that this was a promising company on the rise.
My subsequent work experience confirmed my feelings. My department focuses on the development of new chemical products. Mr. Junpeng Chen, the head of the department, graduated from Nankai University, which ranks the first tier in China in terms of chemical research level. Other teammates graduated with different majors from China Agricultural University, Zhejiang University, and South China Agricultural University. Relying on the strong academic background of the team members and the work attitude of never-give-up, the department is like a boat sailing steadily across the sea under the helm of the leader. Many newly developed products will be launched into the market soon.
Mr. Chen is humorous and inclusive. Many of the newcomers to the team either just left school or just turned to chemical research from other fields. Like me, I was a cultivar before joining the company and before that, I was a breeder. But life is full of changes. Although I have never been in the plant protection field, I’m starting a new career in developing chemicals. Initially, I know nothing about the chemical functions and experiment design, so Mr. Chen arranged for an experienced teammate Xiaowei Huang to help me. I traveled a lot and did experiments with Huang in my first year. With the encouragement of Mr. Chen and the help of my colleagues, I learn from my mistakes and gradually grow into a leader. Now I can do the research independently and have my team of three. This is how Mr. Chen mentors all young researchers. Everyone can continuously improve their abilities, and if they make important contributions to the team, they will be rewarded generously at the end of the year.
The atmosphere of the department is like one big family, without the intense competition and heated fighting that are common in other workplaces. Instead, everyone is kind, friendly, and sharing. For example, after I isolated the pathogen, I will hand it over to Huang for biocontrol experiments, and share it with Zhongyu Xu to screen useful chemicals. Whoever has a good experimental method or literature channel will naturally share it with the group. Sometimes we may have time conflicts regarding labor use or land use for experiments. That being the case, the two parties will negotiate together to come up with a better plan without delaying anyone’s experiment. In this group, everyone feels like they are part of the big family. Mr. Chen’s relaxed leadership style brings us together and creates a proactive environment for us.
Additionally, our team often organizes some workout activities, like climbing Siming Mountain. I still remember that we climbed the mountain together a year ago and finished 13 kilometers in one day. It’s been a tough trip. Although the view was beautiful and the air was fresh, it was still too tiring to climb up and down the hills and step on the unpaved trail. But in the end, we made it and made it to the top. I think activities like this are a great way to develop perseverance and hard-working spirit. In addition, we also have group diner, KTV, and other activities, which are good ways to strengthen relationships.
