A Bird-Friendly Agriculture

Sunjoy Agro has developed a line of micronutrient fertilizer products, which not only offer nutrient supplication for crops, but also protect seeds, seedlings and fruits from being damaged by birds. Of course, the product has no harm on birds.

Farmers have mixed feelings about wild birds. On the one hand, some bird species help with regard to worms, but on the other hand, the vast majority of birds can cause significant financial loss by feeding on crops, vegetables and fruits. With environmental improvement and policy protection, wild birds are becoming a nuisance to agriculture as they grow substantially in numbers and wreak havoc on crops.

Cereal crops are staple food for the majority of the world population, and they are vulnerable to bird attacks from the milky stage to maturation. In the most seriously affected paddy zones, wild birds can wipe out up to 80% of the yield.

Bird control is a billion-dollar market in the world. However, apart from traditional methods including scarecrows, ultrasonic repellent, discs set and bird spikes, there are very few chemical products on the market that can meet the requirements of bird safety and control effectiveness. Previously, farmers had used toxic pesticides, including organophosphates and carbosulfan, to kill birds, and bad smells, such as methyl-2-aminobenzoate, to repel birds. But as people pay more attention to the protection of the environment and birds, these unpleasant chemicals are gradually being discarded, and farmers are looking for more friendly ways to keep birds away from their crops.

To find the balance point between environment and agriculture became our research focus. Sunjoy Agro is determined to develop a control measure that is non-toxic, cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and can be easily adopted by farmers. After 8 years of research and experiment, we developed a line of bird repellent products with preventive and protective traits. Birdoff A, a liqiud fertilizer ( Zn≥100g/L) is the first product in the line, contains zinc, an essential micronutrient for the growth and development of plants, and a proprietary compound that offers effective protection of newly planted seeds, seedlings and fruits from bird damages. It can be used as a seed treatment for seed dressing, and can also be used for spraying seedlings and fruit.

Zinc is an essential component of various enzymes for driving many metabolic reactions in all crops. For example, zinc can promote pollen viability and provides tolerance to soil pathogens. If specific enzymes are lacking in plant tissue, plant growth and development will be affected, and in severe cases, growth will even stop. Studies have shown that the formation of carbohydrates, proteins, and chlorophyll is significantly reduced in zinc-deficient plants. Therefore, a constant supply of zinc fertilizer is required for optimal plant growth and maximum yield.

The patented active ingredient has a unique mechanism of action, based on birds’ taste receptors, which deter birds from eating after the first bite. In addition, we use superior film-forming technology to make the product appear bright red, further using visual effects to repel gluttonous birds.

As a result of using Birdoff A, farmers will reduce unnecessary crop loss due to bird damage and ensure more vigorous and productive fields in the harvest season. The product works as a shield over the coated seeds and offers a long lasting protection against bird attacks. It guarantees a relatively high seedling emergence rate and reduces the risk of costly replanting, therefore, leads to potential for high yield. Besides, treated seedlings will have better growing performance compared to the untreated ones, especially for the growth rate of roots and stems. This characteristic also improves crops’ responses to environmental stress and climate changes.
