Control Rice False Smut Disease by COPPERKING
Fungicide
Rice false smut disease is a fungal disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens that affects rice production worldwide. Disease symptoms usually appear when the grains mature and the pericarp splits, making it easier for the pathogen to enter and develop. The disease not only causes considerable losses in terms of grain yield and quality but also acts as a health hazard to humans and animals due to poisonous mycotoxins contaminating the rice grains and straws of infected plants.
To prevent and control rice false smut disease, Sunjoy Agro recommends the use of Copperking (Copper Oxychloride 84% DF) as a preventative measure, usually applied 5-7 days before the heading stage.
Copper Oxychloride is a protective fungicide with multiple sites of action. It works as an enzyme inhibitor and affects the process of glycolysis. Copper ions inhibit enzyme activity by binding to enzymes containing sulfhydryl groups. In addition, copper ions can break down the structure of the cell membrane of pathogens and affect their permeability. This makes some metal ions, especially K+, penetrate outside the cell and hinder the energy metabolism process. Eventually, pathogens such as fungi, Oomycetes, and bacteria will fail to infest the plant with the protection of copper Oxychloride.
Sunjoy Agro conducted a field trial to control rice false smut disease using Copperking in July 2023 in Anhui province. The disease had already occurred in the fields at the time of the trial. Drones were used to spray Copperking at a dosage of 500g/ha. Ten days after the application, it was observed that in the untreated area, the disease had spread widely, and the spores of the infected rice grains were brown and looked alive. While in the treated area, the pathogens had dried up and turned black, meaning they had died and lost the ability to reinfect. This demonstrates the effectiveness of Copperking in inhibiting the spread of rice false smut disease.
