Pest Control in Pepper Thrips

Thrips are tiny insects about the size of a sewing needle that feed on a variety of plants. These insects are also known as thysanoptera or thunderflies. They are sucking insects that can cause damage to plants. When they spread viruses to plants, the damage they cause can multiply exponentially.

 

Thrips can be a major problem for pepper growers because they suck the juice from pepper leaves, flowers, and young fruits, leading to significant damage to the plant at all growing stages. During the seedling stage, thrips damage can cause leaf shrinkage, roughness, and withered spots on the affected areas. In the flowering stage, it can cause flower buds to fall off, and in the fruit-setting stage, it can induce the failure of fruit-bearing. Moreover, thrip feeding can often spread viruses quickly over a wide area. 

 

Sunjoy Agro recommends the combination solution of JEDI + TINK 70 + COMATCH as an effective solution for pepper thrip management. JEDI (8% Emamectin Benzoate WG), TINK 70 (70% Acetamiprid WG), and COMATCH (24% Lufenuron + Chlorfenapyr SC) offer fast, effective, and long-lasting control efficacy for thrips management.

 

We have done several field trials to control pepper thrips. For example, in July 2023, at Yunlong town, Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, we conducted a sampling survey on the thrips population before applying pesticides. We selected 20 pepper flowers and calculated an average of 18 thrips per flower. We uniformly sprayed JEDI +TINK 70 + COMATCH on pepper plants, diluted in 500, 3000, and 1500 times respectively.

 

After 24 hours, the JEDI + TINK 70 + COMATCH solution provided an 85.21% control effect. The population of treated thrips per flower decreased to 3.09, while the untreated group remained at around 18. After 7 days, the control effect of the insecticides was still over 88%. The population of the treated thrips per flower was maintained at around 4.64, while the untreated group reached 28 per flower. This case provided strong evidence of the solution’s effectiveness in controlling thrips.
