Management of Leafminers on Onions
Insecticide
Leafminer fly, Liriomyza sp., is one of the main pests of onion crops in Southeast Asia and the Pacific regions, including Indonesia, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
Adult leafminer flies are small black-and-yellow insects that feed on plant juice by puncturing leaves linearly. The resulting puncture wounds become more visible over time as the damaged tissue dries and turns to white scar tissue, as shown in Figure 1. Females lay eggs within the leaf tissue, and after hatching, the white-to-yellow larvae tunnel within the tissue. Large larvae may produce characteristic "mines" visible from the outside of the leaf, as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3. The larvae finally exit the leaf, depending on the completion of their development, and then pupate in the soil or the leaf mines.
Leafminer Damage is significant, affecting the overall appearance of green vegetables. Besides, contamination by pupae and larvae is also a big problem for crop sales. Leafminers attack a wide variety of crops, including vegetables such as lettuce, celery, and leafy brassicas. The potential for damage to onions and garlic will be higher when other hosts are grown nearby.
Biological management, like parasitic wasps, can reduce leafminer numbers, but these wasps are very susceptible to insecticide sprays, so they may not be effective in fields where insecticides have been used nearby. Thus, chemical control may be a more efficient tactic.
Sunjoy Agro recommends RALLYBALL (Lufenuron 10% SC) and Abamectin 1.8% EC to control leafminers on onions. Lufenuron has stomach poisoning and certain contact-killing effects. It works by inhibiting chitin biosynthesis and preventing the formation of insect epidermis. Lufenuron not only controls larvae but also has a good ovicidal effect. Abamectin mainly has stomach poisoning and contact-killing effects, and also has a fumigation effect. It is primarily used to control pest larvae. After contact with Abamectin, the pests become paralyzed and stop feeding. The combination of these two products can provide quick and long-lasting control of leafminers.
