Control Fall Armyworm by PROMATCH

Insecticide

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a lepidopteran pest that feeds in large numbers on the leaves, stems, and reproductive parts of more than 350 plant species, causing major damage to economically important cultivated grasses such as maize, rice, sorghum, sugarcane and wheat, as well as to other vegetable crops and cotton. Native to the Americas, it has been repeatedly intercepted at quarantine in Europe and was first reported from Africa in 2016, where it caused significant damage to maize crops. So far, it is reported that S. frugiperda has invaded Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, China, and Sri Lanka. The ideal climatic conditions for fall armyworm present in many parts of Africa and Asia, and the abundance of suitable host plants, suggests that the pest can produce several generations in a single season, which can lead to disasters for host plants. Also, the frequent use of pesticides can easily cause pests to develop resistance over time.

Sunjoy Agro recommends PROMATCH (Chlorantraniliprole 30%+Lufenuron 45% WDG) to control the fall armyworm.

Chlorantraniliprole, classified under IRAC Group 28, works by activating ryanodine receptors in pests, releasing stored calcium ions within their cells. It disrupts muscle regulation, leading to paralysis and eventually pest death. It effectively controls lepidopteran pests, such as rice borers, diamondback moths, and corn borers, while being environmentally safe for non-target organisms.

Lufenuron, classified under IRAC Group 15, is a broad-spectrum insect growth regulator effective against lepidopteran and coleopteran pests, as well as mites, by inhibiting chitin synthesis, leading to disrupted molting and egg development with ovicidal and larvicidal activity. Its key features include long residual activity, selectivity toward beneficial insects, and compatibility with IPM programs due to low mammalian toxicity.

In July 2022, Sunjoy Agro conducted field trials of different pesticide formulations and dosages against fall armyworm in corn fields. The tested products included PROMATCH (Chlorantraniliprole 30%+Lufenuron 45% WDG) at three dosages of 33.75g/ha, 45g/ha, and 56.25g/ha, and two competitors, Chlorantraniliprole 200g/L SC at 36mL/ha, and Lufenuron 50g/L EC at 37.5mL/ha. At 1 day after application (1DDA), the highest control efficacy of 81.44% was achieved with PROMATCH at 56.25g/ha, followed by the 45g/ha dosage (78.26%). Chlorantraniliprole SC and Lufenuron SC achieved efficacy of 74.50% and 45.45% respectively. At 10DAA, all treatments demonstrated improved performance, with PROMATCH at 56.25g/ha remaining the most effective (90.29%), surpassing the performance of the two competitors. The results suggest that PROMATCH provides rapid and sustained control of fall armyworm, particularly at higher dosages.
