Control Citrus Bacterial Canker with COPPERSONG

Fungicide

Citrus canker disease is a significant bacterial disease that harms citrus, leading to a serious decline in the quality and yield of citrus fruits. It is the second largest quarantine disease after citrus greening disease and impacts numerous orchards annually.

Citrus canker is caused by Xanthomonas campestris, which mainly affects the leaves, branches, and fruits of citrus. The infected leaves develop small, yellow or dark yellow-green, oil-stained round spots, which are slightly raised. As the disease progresses, the infected area will rupture and become a grayish-white and spongy bulge. The spots will then enlarge, penetrate the leaves, become corky, turn grey-brown, exhibit a central depression with fine ring patterns, and ultimately crack, forming a crater with a yellow halo around it. On the other hand, the spots on the fruits are larger, more solid, and show more crater-like cracking than those on the leaves. Additionally, the infected plants will experience leaf and fruit drop, leading to weakened trees and poor-looking fruits. Once a tree is infected with citrus canker, it carries the disease forever. Therefore, it is important to implement preventive measures to control the disease.

Controlling citrus canker with inorganic copper fungicides has many advantages. The fungicide forms a protective film on the surface of crops and releases divalent copper ions to sterilize the targeted areas. It protects against both fungal and bacterial diseases, has a long-lasting effect of about 15 days, and with no resistance.

Sunjoy Agro recommends COPPERSONG (Copper hydroxide 77% WG) to control citrus canker. COPPERSONG uses refined copper ore from Chile and adheres to strict quality inspection standards to ensure that each batch of products has received organic agriculture certification from the European Union, Japan, and the United States. It uses advanced dry suspension technology, offering higher stability and safer efficacy compared to normal suspension concentrate and emulsifiable concentrate. The product can be used with drones and will not block the spray nozzles. It directly releases divalent copper ions for quick effects. It forms fine particles and covers large areas, minimizing liquid content per unit area, thus reducing the risk of phytotoxicity and leaving the leaves and fruit surfaces clean. After diluting, the pH value of COPPERSONG is near neutral and can be mixed with other pesticides.

Sunjoy Agro recommends using COPPERSONG to prevent and treat citrus canker during key periods. We suggest spraying twice during the spring shoot period for protection and prevention, once in hot and humid weather during the summer season, and once during the autumn shoot period to protect the plants and control the disease spots on fruits. COPPERSONG can control the spread of citrus canker spots and produce a "golden edge" around them.

In addition to chemical control, it is important to strengthen cultivation and management practices to prevent and control citrus canker. Firstly, avoid excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer and increase potassium fertilizer appropriately, because too much nitrogen fertilizer can promote disease occurrence. Secondly, manage the orchard’s fertilizer and water carefully to ensure neat sprouting of summer and autumn buds. Lastly, thoroughly clean the orchard in winter, remove diseased leaves, branches, and fruits, and then dispose of and burn them outside the orchard to prevent the spread of the disease.
