Protect Peaches from bird damage by BIRDOFF
Bird Repellent
In recent years, increasing awareness of sustainable development has led to significant improvements in the ecological environment. It has secured the survival resources for bird species like their habitats, leading to a notable increase in both their diversity and populations. However, the consequential losses in crops due to bird feeding have become growing concerns, with birds pecking at crop seeds, fruits, and grains.
To address the prevalent occurrence of bird damage, people have been using physical methods, such as shining tapes to scare away birds, as well as chemical solutions. In the past, chemical products often directly poisoned birds, but now most chemical bird repellents rely on irritating odors to drive them away. Nevertheless, these chemical products often have unstable effects and limited efficacy duration.
Focusing on the need for crop protection, Sunjoy Agro has pioneered a liquid fertilizer product called BIRDOFF based on Zinc that also has bird-repelling functions. The series of BIRDOFF products can provide the necessary nutrients for crop growth while offering bird-repelling effects for over two weeks. It belongs to the category of taste repellents, which utilizes birds' aversion to bitter substances. When birds encounter BIRDOFF-treated crops and experience the unpleasant taste, they desist from further feeding, effectively achieving the goal of bird deterrence without endangering their health.
In July 2024, a field trial was conducted in a peach orchard located in the mountainous region of Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province. The orchard had experienced severe bird damage in previous years due to a high bird population. Despite the effort to bag the fruit, the birds managed to peck through the bags and feed on the fruits.
The trial involved the testing of two products. BIRDOFF-white, a bird-repelling fertilizer formulated for non-bagged fruits, and BIRDOFF-brown, designed to deter birds from bagged fruits. The application dilution ratios for the two products were 500 times and 300 times, respectively, and they were sprayed directly onto the fruits or bags. A follow-up evaluation was conducted after one week to assess the control effects.
BIRDOFF-white treated peaches were minimally pecked in the non-bagged area, while the untreated peaches were almost all damaged and fell off. In the bagged area, the peaches treated with BIRDOFF-brown were initially pecked through the bags, but the birds ceased further feeding on the fruits. In contrast, birds pecking through the bags seriously affected the untreated peaches in this area.
